Preventative Dentistry

As we age we are more likely to lose our teeth to periodontal (gum) disease rather than to cavities.  In order to maintain optimal dental health it is important to visit our office on a regular basis.  The interval of time between visits varies per individual patient and is relative to one’s own condition.  A detailed oral evaluation is performed at each ‘check-up’ appointment.  This evaluation consists of an examination of all hard and soft oral tissues such as the teeth, gums, palate, cheeks, tongue, and throat.  Digital x-rays are usually taken on an annual basis.  Afterwards, a dental cleaning may be performed.

Dental Cleanings

Upon your dental examination we will evaluate your gum tissue and review your x-rays to check the bone that supports your teeth.  If you are found to have no periodontal (gum) problems a cleaning will be performed on your teeth.  Our dental hygienist will remove any plaque, tartar, or stain from your teeth.  We will also provide you with instruction on how to keep your smile healthy and bright.  Most dental patients are recommended to have their teeth cleaned twice per year.

Periodontal Cleaning and Maintenance

If you are found to have periodontal disease a treatment called scaling and root planning may be recommended.  Periodontal, or gum, disease occurs when bacteria found in plaque produce toxins causing your gum tissue to swell and bleed.  If untreated, the bacteria will begin to erode the bone support around your teeth.  The remaining plaque will mineralize forming tartar, which can’t be removed by the patient.  Scaling and root planning is a non-surgical technique used to treat periodontal disease.  It can occur under local anesthetic and is the removal of the tartar, plaque, and bacteria found under and above the gum line.  Once these agents are removed the tissue can begin to heal.  Although new bone will not return, the disease progress can be halted.  Patients who have undergone this treatment are then placed on a Periodontal Maintenance program where their teeth are evaluated and cleaned every three to four months.
If periodontal disease is left unchecked, the gradual destruction of the supportive tissue that holds one’s teeth will occur.  When this happens a patient may be referred to a periodontist who may recommend gum surgery.  If the condition is deemed untreatable, there may be no other choice but to remove teeth.  Periodontal disease affects millions of people and is linked to systemic diseases.  It is well known that controlling gum disease can lead to a healthier and happier individual.
